The number one reason that Healing is God’s Will for us, is because healing is in God’s redemptive plan.
Isa 53:3-5
3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

We’ll focus on verse 4 on the words: griefs and sorrows
Of course the OT was originally written in Hebrew and the Hebrew word for griefs is:
choliy, pronounced kholee’, which is translated in other places in the bible as disease, grief, sickness.

The word sorrows in Hebrew is: makob meaning grief, pain, sorrow.
But, why not let the bible be it’s own interpretation. Let’s take a look at how the Holy Spirit through Matthew interprets this verse:

Matt 8:16-17
16 When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:
17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.

We can plainly see that Jesus Himself took our infirmities and bare our sicknesses. But, let’s get another witness to this scripture in Isaiah.
Peter looking back at the cross, looking back at when our redemption took place said:
1 Peter 2:24
24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

So we can indeed see that when Jesus hung on that tree, on that cross, Jesus not only bore our sins, but the stripes that were laid on our back were for our healing as well.
Our redemption was twofold: Jesus took our sins, Jesus took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses, just as Matthew quotes Isaiah. Think about that: Himself took our infirmities and bare our sicknesses!

Some say, oh that’s just talking about spiritual healing…
First of all, the sinner doesn’t get healed. Paul, writing to the Corinthians says
2 Cor 5:17
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
So, a sinner doesn’t get healed; God says the sinnner becomes a brand new creature in Christ Jesus.
Secondly, the stripes that Jesus took on his back were for our physical healing.
I have personally heard some say (even ministers) that all sickness and disease can be traced back to 39 original diseases, corresponding to the 39 stripes that were laid on Jesus’ back. While that sounds real ‘religious’, it is quite wrong and quite ridiculous.
These people are wrong for 2 reasons:
1) all sickness can be traced back to the devil:
Rom 5:12
12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
Because of sin, death, both spiritual and ultimately physical, and everything that causes death, sickness and disease, passed upon all men. All causes of death came upon men because of man’s sin. Who could possibly say that all sickness and all disease can be traced back to 39 causes or diseases?
2) Who says Jesus received 39 stripes on his back??? That is ignorance gone to seed! The forty less one rule was a Jewish law you’ll find in Deuteronomy 25:3. THE JEWS DIDN’T BEAT JESUS!
The Roman Soldiers beat Jesus! The Romans did not regard nor abide by Jewish Law. The Roman Soldiers beat Jesus and they had no such law or tradition.

The Romans beat Jesus for so long and so hard, that Isaiah foretold of the horrible beating of Jesus hundreds of years before it happened:
Isa 52:14
14 As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:
He was beaten for so long and hard that he didn’t even look like a man anymore! He was marred MORE than any other man. That includes the beatings that Paul received FROM THE JEWS!. Paul said in
2 Cor 11:24
24 Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one.
Paul received 195 stripes at the hands of the Jews.
The big, burly, Roman Soldiers beat Jesus with the idea of trying to kill Him; if they killed Him, they wouldn’t have to go to the trouble of crucifying Him on the cross. But they couldn’t kill Him. But he was indeed marred MORE than any other man.

Dr Robert Young, the author of Young’s Analytical Concordance says the literal translation of
Isa 53:5
5 And he is pierced for our transgressions, Bruised for our iniquities, The chastisement of our peace [is] on him, And by his bruise there is healing to us.
The body of Jesus was one massive bruise, singular, NOT bruises, plural. By his bruise, there is healing to us!

So there you have it in a nutshell:
He was pierced for our transgressions
By his bruise, there is healing to us!

Praise God for our Twofold Redemption.

There are many reasons, but let’s look at the only reason that’s given in the New Testament that would answer this question.

The Bible tells us in
1 Cor 11:30
30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.

For what cause? Let’s look at the previous verse.
1 Cor 11:29
29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.
For the cause of ‘not discerning the Lord’s body.’

What does that mean?
This was said in the context of taking the Lord’s supper.
To discern means to see.
If we don’t see that the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ was shed for our remission of sins, if we don’t see or know or understand that His body was broken for our physical sustenance…, for this cause of not discerning the Lord’s body, many are weak and sickly among you (the church) and many sleep…or have died prematurely.

It is by the stripes that were laid on Jesus’s back that healing is granted to us. If we don’t see that ‘by his stripes we are healed,’ then the only alternative is to be weak and sickly and die prematurely.

Let’s get some more witnesses to this:
Isa 53:5
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
Matt 8:17
17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.
1 Peter 2:24
24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

Some have wrongly said that Jesus took 39 stripes on his back for us.., that’s really ignorance gone to seed. That was a Jewish tradition and Jews didn’t beat Jesus; he was beaten by Roman soldiers and they didn’t abide by Jewish law and tradition. Jesus was beaten to such a bloody pulp until those Roman soldiers were worn out. We are told in Isaiah 52:14 that ‘As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:’
Jesus was beaten and marred more than any man had ever been beaten; it didn’t even look like a man when they were done with him.

Matthew says those stripes that were laid on him were for our physical healing – “Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.” Peter, looking back on the cross says, ‘by whose stripes ye were healed.”

Why are Christians sick? For this cause, not discerning the Lord’s body!

But there’s also another meaning here: The Lord’s body is also the church. We need to walk in love toward our fellow Christians.
1 Cor 11:31-32
31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.
32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

We need to judge ourselves of sin; we need to judge ourselves of how we treat our brethren. God gives us every opportunity to judge ourselves of sin. Sin is disobedience; sin separates us from God where we get under the devil’s territory. And if we’re going to persist in sin and not judge ourselves then we’ll be like the man in

1 Cor 5:1-5
5 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife.
2 And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.
3 For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,
4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,
5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

Here is evidently a man that had taken his step-mother and was living in open sin with her; and the church was just winking at it. Neither the man, nor the church were judging this. So Paul says ye are puffed up and have not even mourned about this. Paul says that in the name of Jesus, they are to deliver him to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

Notice, it wasn’t God that judged him. He was turned over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh.

Why are Christians sick?
Not discerning the Lord’s body..,

not seeing that those stripes on Jesus were for our healing;

not walking in love toward our brethren

The Bible says in Rom 5:12
12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
Who is the ‘one man’ whereby sin entered into the world, and death by sin?
That was of course, Adam.

Let’s go on reading…,

Rom 5:13-21

13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.
15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.
17 For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
We are to reign in life through Jesus Christ
18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
Why is it that only ‘many’ shall be made righteous? Because not everyone will believe in Jesus.
20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Bible also says in @ Cor 4:4
4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

So when you put it all together, we can see a clear picture of what happened back in the garden of Eden:

Adam committed high treason and sold out to the devil. He really didn’t have the moral right to do so, but he had the legal right. And when he sold out to the devil, he became the god of this world. Death, sin, sickness, disease and everything that causes death entered into this world because of Adam’s sin. John Alexander Dowie said that sickness is the foul offspring of its mother, sin and its father, Satan.

We are also told in
1 Cor 15:22
22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
1 Cor 15:47
47 The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.

The good news is that even though Adam sold out to the devil, it is through Christ that all shall be made alive.
